Influenza (flu) is a contagious illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year
The following measures will also help to fight the flu:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. (Germs spread this way.)
Avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home if you are sick until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100°F or 37.8°C) or signs of a fever without the use of a fever-reducing medicine, such as Tylenol.
Vaccine experts recently determined that starting with the 2011-2012 flu season, everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccination each year.
Contact your health care provider, local pharmacy or the Albany County Department of Health at (518) 447-4589 to schedule your flu vaccination.
