Summer Heat Alert for Seniors

During the hot summer months seniors and those with chronic health conditions are at the greatest risk for heat stroke. To avoid being overcome by the heat: drink plenty of water and eat fruit to replenish fluids in the body; eat light meals; take cool showers or baths; wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing; keep your rooms air conditioned or well ventilated and close curtains to keep the sunlight out. If you have to go out doors, stay in the shade; wear a hat and light colored clothing.

What can you do to help a senior in your neighborhood? Go knock on the door and ask how things are going. The person may not realize they are suffering from heat exhaustion. Know the signs of heat stroke and take immediate action if necessary. Temperatures inside the home should not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit for prolonged periods of time. Invite them into air conditioning, or offer to take them to an air conditioned movie, mall or senior center.
